Update to this post. Warning: spoilers ahead.

While surfing earlier today I came across Aaron Suggs' post about the most obvious plot hole in the entire X-Men 2 movie (aside from that whole question of what particular mutated gene would allow someone to control the weather or transport or shoot lasers out of one's eyes). Near the end, Jean Gray telekinetically holds back a lake's worth of water, giving the rest of the characters a chance to escape in the Blackbird before the water engulfs her. While watching the leadup to this particular scene, I was sure that Iceman would freeze the oncoming wave, thus saving the day. However for some reason— Aaron speculates on underdeveloped powers or Professor X's schemings— Iceman sits by while Jean sacrifices herself. I for one think the writers could have easily solved this problem with two lines of dialog after the point when Nightcrawler said Jean wouldn't let him transport her out of danger:

Someone: Nightcrawler! Can you transport her out of there?

Nightcrawler: No. She is preventing me.

Someone: How about you Iceman? Can you freeze the water?

Iceman: I can't. There's too much. It's moving too fast.

Everyone: (Look helplessly out the window)

In addition to this problem, I also noticed two other details which could have used more explanation. First, why did everyone bother to run to Wolverine's "other exit" when the bunker's main doors closed? Why didn't Nightcrawler just transport them each back to the Blackbird? He'd seen it, and it coulnd't have been that far away if they were able to run there before the dam burst. Second, how was Storm able to freeze Cerebro II despite being inside and underground?

As usual, I'm taking it far too seriously. It was quite entertaing nonetheless.

Update to the update: Doug had the idea during an IM conversation that Jean could have levitated the plane from the inside. Hey, it worked for Magneto's metal plate...
