Thank you for your comment, Mary Ruth. I am pleased that you are interested in geohashing.

Geohashing is a travel activity in which people attempt to reach algorithmically-generated latitude and longitude coordinates. The comic at http://www.xkcd.com/426/ explains the algorithm, and http://xkcd.com/geohashing implements it using Google Maps. Clicking your region (a 1-degree-by-1-degree area) will display the day’s coordinates for that region. If you reach the coordinates on Saturday at 4:00, you may meet other geohashers.

If you reach the coordinates, it is customary to take pictures and post a description of the adventure on the Geohashing Wiki (http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/Main_Page). You can edit the wiki just like Wikipedia; just look through a few region (e.g. http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/Champaign/Urbana%2C_Illinois) or expedition (e.g. http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/2008-08-23_40_-88) pages to see the unofficial “standard” structure.

Have fun! Send me a link when you reach your first coordinates.
